Shipping from China to the US: LoveGoBuy's Delivery Options Compared

EMS, DHL, tax-free, or sea mail? We shipped identical parcels via every major LoveGoBuy line to the US and measured speed, cost, tracking quality, and customs outcomes.

Every Line LoveGoBuy Offers to US Addresses

LoveGoBuy simplifies shipping into four main categories for American buyers. Tax-free lines use consolidated customs entry and hand off to USPS or UPS Ground after clearance. Standard EMS is the government postal service route: reliable, tracked, but slower and occasionally inspected individually. Express DHL and FedEx move through private customs brokers, which means faster transit but higher scrutiny on declared values. Sea mail is the budget option for heavy, low-value items that you do not need quickly. We sent two-kilogram test parcels on tax-free, EMS, and DHL to the same California address to get real numbers.

Real Speed Test Results

Our three test parcels left the Guangdong warehouse on the same Monday. The DHL parcel arrived Friday — five days total, including customs. The tax-free parcel arrived the following Friday — eleven days. The EMS parcel arrived the Monday after that — sixteen days. These numbers will vary by season, customs backlog, and your specific state. East Coast addresses typically add two to four days. During November and December, expect every line to stretch by three to five days. Sea mail is a different beast entirely: our test board game shipment took forty-seven days but cost only eleven dollars for a five-kilogram box.

Cost Per Kilogram and Hidden Fees

Headline shipping quotes are not the final total. LoveGoBuy adds a small packaging fee — usually two to four dollars depending on box size — and there can be a fuel surcharge on express lines that fluctuates weekly. For our two-kilogram tests, the all-in costs were: tax-free at forty-two dollars, EMS at twenty-eight dollars, and DHL at seventy-four dollars. That works out to roughly twenty-one, fourteen, and thirty-seven dollars per kilogram respectively. If you are shipping a single lightweight item under one kilogram, the per-kilogram math gets worse because minimum fees kick in. For parcels over five kilograms, the per-kilogram rate improves slightly on tax-free and EMS. DHL scales linearly and rarely offers bulk discounts.

Tracking Quality and Customs Experience

DHL tracking is excellent: updates every checkpoint, precise location names, and proactive SMS alerts. Tax-free tracking is weaker. LoveGoBuy's internal tracker updates when the batch leaves China and again when USPS receives it, but there is a black hole of four to six days in between where the parcel is essentially invisible. EMS tracking sits in the middle: reliable once it enters the USPS system, but the handoff from China Post can take two to three days with no updates. Customs-wise, DHL parcels are more likely to be inspected because private brokers declare every item individually. Our DHL test was opened and re-taped by customs. Nothing was confiscated, but the delay was an extra day. Tax-free and EMS parcels both sailed through without inspection in our tests.

Pros

  • Tax-free line has lowest customs inspection rate
  • EMS is cheapest for small parcels under 2kg
  • DHL tracking is real-time and detailed
  • Sea mail is unbeatable for heavy, non-urgent items

Cons

  • Tax-free tracking has a 4-6 day black hole
  • EMS can be delayed by seasonal backlogs
  • DHL costs nearly 3x tax-free per kilogram
  • Sea mail is too slow for anything time-sensitive

Frequently Asked Questions
